This thirst-quenching Sauvignon Blanc from Peru offers freshness and delicacy at the same time. Grassy notes combine with citrus and subtle tropical fruit, making it ideal as an aperitif or a great accompaniment to seafood dishes.
Viñas Queirolo were founded in 1880 by Italian immigrants. The 3rd generation of the family, currently in charge, began the renewal of the winery with the help of renowned consultants Jacques Blouin and Edmundo Bordeu.
Jorge Queirolo, the 3rd generation of the family, is the head winemaker. Along with his oenology team, he aims at producing wines and spirits that reveal the personality of Peruvian terroir.
In 2000 the family acquired some land in the Ica Valley. Ica Valley is located at the feet of the Andes, 60km from the coastline and over 500m above sea level. Here, Viñas Queirolo vineyards are planted on the hillsides with deep loamy soils and stones, a natural resource of minerals.
Viñas Queirolo employs a drip irrigation system and grapes are carefully hand-picked.
Currently Queirolo Vineyards owns approximately 700 hectares of vineyards.
Vinification is carried out in a state-of-the-art winery in Pachacamac, with controlled temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
Since 2008, Viñas Queirolo has been offering guided tours of the winery and vineyards and tastings, wine pairing dinners, conferences and seminars, with the aim of spreading the culture of Peruvian Wine and Pisco, and in 2011 Viñas Queirolo Hotel opens, the first and only Peruvian hotel located on a vineyard, in the Ica Valley.
Location: Vineyards are located in the highland of Ica Valley, at the feet of the Andean Mountains, over 500m above sea level and 60km from the coastline. A saline character is imparted by the Pacific Ocean proximity.
Soils: Deep loam soils, an ideal mix of clay sand and silt, balancing drainage and water retention.
Climate: Desert weather, with fresh to cold winters, sunny and hot summers. The large thermal amplitude reaches differences up to 20ºC between day and night, turning the Ica Valley into a real oasis for vines. The unique desert climate, with warm sunny days and cool nights, produces grapes with delicate aromas and bright acidity.
Philosophy: Viñas Queirolo takes a minimal intervention and sustainable approach to viticulture and winemaking. For example, to protect against common diseases such as mildew, only sulphur is used. To aid fertilization, only organic compost is used. To fining and filtering and to maximise flavours and textures, light tangential filters are used.
Grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc 100%
Winemaking: Harvested early January. 50% was fermented at low temperature (13ºC) to enhance its citrus and fresh-cut grass aromas, while 50% was fermented at slightly higher temperatures (15ºC) in order to capture tropical fruit notes.
Notes reminiscent of freshly cut grass, white peach, mandarin and passion fruit on the nose. The palate is very fresh and delicate, with a persistent and lifting acidity throughout.
