This supple and juicy, old-vine Merlot comes from the tiny Domaine de St Estève in the Languedoc.

Background

Set amongst a stunning backdrop of vineyards and pine trees, the majestic 19th century château at Domaine de St Estève dominates the surrounding landscape. This beautiful building is home to the Garcia family, who have lived and produced wine at this property near the borders of the Minervois wine region for four generations.

The château, and its agricultural buildings are located on the alluvial plain of the ancient bed of the River Aude, surrounded by 60 hectares of grape vines. A further 30h of forest land and garrigue border the vineyards adding natural protection from the wind as well as much of the charm and beauty associated with the commune of Tourouzelle and its long viticultural history. As recently as the 1980s, all the vines on the property were replanted with higher quality grape varieties in line with South West France’s drive towards making top quality varietal wines to compete with the international market. Domaine St Estève’s soft and juicy Merlot is the perfect example of this modern, more international-styled red.

Vineyard Information

Location: in the Tourouzelle commune near the borders of the Minervois and Corbières wine regions.

Climate: warm Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers and mild winters.

Soil: the alluvial soil contains gravel, sand and silt which are excellent for drainage and deep root penetration.

Winemaking Details

Grape Variety: 100% Merlot

Fermentation: hand harvested grapes are vinified in coated concrete tanks to keep the Merlot fruit fresh and pure. Fermentation temperatures are regulated to maximise aroma and flavour.

Clarification: the liquid is cleared naturally using gravity instead of clarifying agents. Any solid particles sink to the bottom of the wine and are then removed by the process of racking.

Tasting Note

Silky, round and ripe, this juicy Merlot is packed full of soft, red fruit and rich plum flavours. This wine is supple enough to drink alone but has enough structure to accompany food.
