Description

Introduction

Agua Santa’s remote coastal vineyards of the Colchagua Valley produce Pinot Noir with the elegant fruit profile typical of Burgundy, the grape’s heartland. Here in the breezy Colchagua Costa, the grape expresses great varietal purity with cherry and forest floor characters, a palpable sense of freshness and fine tannins. In an exciting new partnership with Edwards Family Vineyards, this wine has been specially blended for Corney & Barrow.

Background

Luís Felipe Edwards’ home is a charming adobe house set amid lush greenery. It nestles at the foot of some of the highest and most spectacular vineyards Chile has to offer. In this oasis of tranquillity, the family has been making their wines with pride for generations. The family’s remote Agua Santa (‘holy water’) vineyards lie in the Colchagua Costa area, just 30 km from the Pacific. Here, in the weathered coastal mountains, older than the Andes, the unique combination of ancient soils, luminous sunshine and cooling ocean breezes give exceptional growing conditions for the delicate Pinot Noir Grape.

Vineyard Information

Location: 13 hectares in La Queseria de Nilahue Estate in Colchagua Costa, approximately 30 km from the Pacific Ocean. The coastal zone of Colchagua has the ideal conditions to produce high quality Pinot Noir, and other cooler climate red varietals.

Climate: Mediterranean with a cool ocean breeze that allows for controlled grape maturation. The large diurnal range, with warm days and cool nights, helps grapes to fully ripen whilst still preserving their natural acidity.

Soil: Variety of soils, granitic on hills and sandy loam in sedimentation basin.

Winemaking Details

Grape Variety:  100% Pinot Noir
Fermentation:
The grapes are hand-picked at optimum ripeness and are destemmed, crushed and transferred to stainless steel tanks with temperature control. Fermentation lasts approximately 10 days at a temperature of between 25-28ºC, in order to give optimum balance and extraction.

Maturation and blending: The wine is then matured in French and American oak barrels for 6 months to gain complexity and structure on the mid- palate. A small proportion of barrel-aged gran reserva wines are incorporated into the blend, conferring additional elegance and complexity.

Tasting Note
Its succulent cherry fruit, subtle spice and forest floor characters show impressive varietal typicity. Classically structured, with more than a nod to the grape’s Burgundian heritage, this is a smooth, supple Pinot Noir with fine supporting tannins and a long finish.
